Good morning folks,
I am Djukun, a direct descendant of Broome WA.
Broome is famous for Cable Beach, right? Everyone goes there because they can drive on one of Australia's most pristine beaches. Cable Beach is not just a stunning tourist destination; it is Billingooroo, a sacred site for the Djukun people.
Well, people who drive along the beach cause significant harm to our fragile ecosystem. This beach is where the vulnerable flatback goolibel (turtles) return to lay their eggs, and vehicle access is devastating their delicate ecosystem. Research has established that the baby goolibel cannot navigate through the tyre tracks to get to the ocean; some of those tyre tracks are very deep, especially when many have driven through, or the baby goolibel are run over as people are driving onto the beach, which is decreasing the flatback goolibel numbers.
The Djukun people are calling for a permanent closure of the vehicle ramp at Cable Beach to protect both the environment and their cultural heritage and value your support to sign our petition for this important campaign. You can visit the Djukun Nation website www.djukunnation.org for more information.
